Charles McCallister was believed to have suffered a medical emergency before veering across the centerline and hitting a 2017 Honda Civic head-on around 6 p.m. Jan. 24, on Clifton Road near Johnny Moore Lane in Clifton, Fairfax County police said.

Three occupants of the Ford Escape, including two young children, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were later released. McCallister was also hospitalized, and died on Jan. 28, authorities said.

On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed McCallister’s death was a result of injuries sustained in the crash, despite the underlying medical emergency being the cause of the crash, the FCPD said.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, police said.
